The NewsGuild of Greater Philadelphia

#Newsmatters day

May 4, 2016

Guild members,

Please join us this Friday, May 6, by participating in the Guild’s national day of action at DFM newspapers – #NewsMatters Day – as we transition to a more public phase of our campaign against Digital First Media and Alden Global Capital.

On Friday, we’re asking all of our members to show their support for our campaign by wearing their #NewsMatters T-shirts and buttons, and by displaying desk tents.  In addition, we’re asking each Guild member to take one simple step.  Sign up right now to receive campaign updates by email through the following link: https://actionnetwork.org/forms/join-the-news-matters-campaign.  It takes less than a minute to sign up, and it’s an essential step for future actions we will take in our campaign.

News is vital to our democracy, and media workers play a critical part in holding public and private institutions accountable.  But Alden Global Capital, the shadowy Wall Street hedge fund that controls DFM, continues to systematically slash staff at its newspapers.  Just last week, newsroom employees at the Denver Post were told that management wants 23 of them to take buyouts – 22 percent of the editorial staff.  In the San Francisco Bay Area, DFM has said it will reduce newsroom by as many as 43 positions – more than 20 percent of the editorial staff.  These cuts pay short-term returns to Alden’s investors, but cause long-term harm to our newspapers

You can help us save quality journalism.  This more public phase of our campaign will call on citizens, journalists and NewsGuild workers nationwide to join an effort to prevent Alden and other Wall Street firms from undermining the crucial role newspapers play in our democracy.  Join us!  Sign up for the #NewsMatters campaign today through the following link  https://actionnetwork.org/forms/join-the-news-matters-campaign – and receive updates about our work and how you can help preserve quality journalism.
