Guild challenges parking rates announced by Philadelphia Media network.

June 28, 2012billrossInquirer

Dear Guild member,

You should have received a note from Philadelphia Media Network about parking at the new 801 Market St. location.

As the company’s parking fee at the new location could be more than double the $44 a month members are paying now to park at 400 N. Broad St. the Guild will file an unfair labor practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board, as an increase of this nature is an adverse effect on working conditions, and a unilateral change that should have been bargained over. We will also file a grievance under our collective bargaining agreement.

Just as a reminder, our contract with the employer expires in October 2013, unlike its other union contracts which all expire in October 2012.

In the meantime, while our challenges proceed, we encourage that members who plan to drive to 801 Market sign up for the parking plan through the company. We will update the membership as the situation progresses over the next few months.

The Guild has addressed the issue of safety and requested the company provide escorts to assist employees to their cars or public transit at night. This is of great concern as our security guards are not scheduled to work at 801 Market and the building’s security does not perform these escort functions.

Please stay tuned for further updates.
